A clamp meter reads current without opening the circuit, and the first question is whether the current is AC or DC. A plain current transformer jaw reads alternating current only and will show nothing on a battery bank, a DC drive link or a solar string. Reading DC needs a Hall effect jaw, which is a different and more expensive instrument that also needs zeroing before each reading. The second question is what the jaw has to fit around: a 42 millimetre jaw does not close around a 100 by 10 millimetre busbar or a bundle of parallel single cores, and a flexible Rogowski coil is the answer when it will not. Then match the job. Earth leakage hunting needs a leakage clamp resolving milliamps, not a 600 amp instrument. Motor troubleshooting benefits from inrush capture. And the whole assembly, jaw included, needs the measurement category of the point it is used at.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Current type | AC only, or AC and DC which requires a Hall effect jaw |
|---|---|
| Current range | Maximum, and the smallest current that must be resolved |
| Leakage measurement | State if milliamp resolution is needed for earth leakage |
| Jaw opening | Conductor or busbar dimension the jaw must close around |
| Flexible coil | Rogowski coil where a rigid jaw will not fit the bundle |
| Measurement category | CAT III or CAT IV with its voltage, matched to the point of use |
| True RMS | Needed on drive outputs and other distorted waveforms |
| Inrush capture | For motor starting current investigation |
| Additional functions | Voltage, resistance, power, harmonics or temperature |
| Display and access | Detachable display or a rotating head for cramped panels |
| Calibration | State if a traceable certificate and a recall interval are required |
| Quantity | Units, and the trades or vehicles they will be issued to |
