Most of these are bought for shaft alignment and runout, and the mistake is buying the indicator without thinking about what holds it. An indicator reading to a hundredth of a millimetre on a magnetic base with a long articulated arm is measuring the sag of its own bracket as much as the misalignment of the coupling β the arm deflects under its own weight and the deflection changes as the assembly rotates through twelve o'clock and six o'clock. Serious alignment work either measures that sag and corrects for it or uses a rigid short fixture. So specify the holding arrangement alongside the instrument. Then match the indicator to the job: plunger types for runout and depth work, lever or test types where access is tight and the stylus must come in at an angle, and a stated travel and resolution that suit the tolerance rather than the finest available.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Indicator type | Plunger dial indicator, lever test indicator, or digital |
|---|---|
| Measuring travel | Total plunger travel needed for the feature |
| Resolution | Graduation matched to the tolerance being checked |
| Accuracy | Over the full travel, not just over one revolution |
| Application | Shaft alignment, runout, flatness, depth or bore comparison |
| Holding fixture | Magnetic base, alignment bracket, or a rigid clamp |
| Bracket sag | State the arm length β sag is measured and corrected in alignment |
| Stem and mounting | Stem diameter or lug back to fit existing fixtures |
| Contact point | Ball, flat or extended tips required |
| Digital output | Data output for recording results, where required |
| Environment | Workshop or field use, and any coolant or dust exposure |
| Calibration | State if a traceable certificate and a recall interval are required |
