This page is about reading flow at the pipe rather than transmitting it to a control system. A variable area meter — a float in a tapered tube, still universally called a rotameter — gives an operator a number on a round with no power, no signal and nothing to fail, and for purge lines, cooling water, seal flushes and gas panels that is exactly the right instrument. Two things govern it. It must be mounted vertically with flow upward, because gravity is part of how it works, and a horizontal installation reads nothing useful. And its scale is calibrated for one fluid at one density, so a tube scaled for water reads wrong on glycol and a tube scaled for air at one pressure reads wrong at another. Sight flow indicators go one step simpler: they confirm that something is moving and in which direction. Flow switches take the same duty and turn it into a contact for an alarm or a pump interlock.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Instrument purpose | Local reading, visual confirmation only, or a switch contact |
|---|---|
| Fluid | The scale is calibrated for one fluid — name it, with density |
| Operating pressure and temperature | Gas scales shift with pressure |
| Flow range | Normal, minimum and maximum through the instrument |
| Mounting orientation | Variable area meters need vertical, flow upward |
| Line size and connection | Threaded or flanged, size, rating and facing |
| Tube and float material | Glass, acrylic or metal tube; float material for the fluid |
| Scale units | Litres per minute, cubic metres per hour, or as used on site |
| Switch output | Contact rating and setpoint, where an alarm or interlock is needed |
| Needle valve | State if an integral regulating valve is required |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if any electrical output must be Ex rated |
| Quantity | Units per range, and the services they serve |
