Vacuum is not one measurement range, it is several decades of pressure, and no single sensing technology spans them. That is the fact that makes this enquiry different from a pressure gauge enquiry. Rough vacuum near atmospheric is read mechanically, by a bourdon or diaphragm element that works the same way a pressure gauge does. Below that, mechanical elements stop responding usefully and thermal conductivity sensors of the Pirani type take over across several decades. Lower still, ionisation gauges are needed. A capacitance manometer is the choice where the reading must be independent of which gas is present, because thermal gauges read differently for different gases and a process that changes its gas composition will appear to change pressure when it has not. So state the working range and the gas, then the connection and whether you need local indication, a transmitted signal, or both.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Working range | The pressure decades the instrument must actually cover |
|---|---|
| Gas or vapour present | Thermal gauges read differently for different gases |
| Sensing technology | Mechanical, Pirani, capacitance manometer or ionisation |
| Gas independence | State if the reading must not vary with gas composition |
| Reference | Absolute pressure, or gauge pressure referenced to atmosphere |
| Output | Local dial only, analogue signal, or digital communication |
| Process connection | Thread, flange or vacuum fitting type and size |
| Wetted material | Must suit the process gas and any condensate |
| Process temperature | At the connection point, not in the vessel |
| Controller or display | State if a separate readout or setpoint relay is required |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if an Ex instrument is needed |
| Calibration | State if a traceable calibration certificate is required |
