A torque gauge is bought to check other tools, and that changes the specification. It is the reference in the workshop, so it needs to be materially better than what it is checking — a tester whose uncertainty is close to the tolerance of the wrench cannot tell a good wrench from a bad one. ISO 6789 sets out the requirements and the calibration of hand torque tools, and it is the document a bolted-joint procedure will point at when it asks for wrenches to be verified at intervals. Two practical decisions follow. The range must bracket the tools in use with the working points inside the reliable part of the span, rather than one instrument stretched across every wrench on site. And the mounting matters more than buyers expect: a bench transducer needs rigid, square mounting, because a tester clamped in a vice that flexes reads the flex as well as the torque, and the error is repeatable enough to look like data.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.

|---|---|
| Tools verified | Click wrenches, dial wrenches, screwdrivers or power tools |
| Direction | Clockwise, anticlockwise, or both |
| Accuracy and uncertainty | Must be better than the tolerance of the tools it checks |
| Instrument type | Bench tester, rotary transducer, or a handheld gauge |
| Drive size | Square drive sizes to accept, and any adaptors required |
| Mounting | Rigid bench or fixture — flexure is read as torque |
| Display modes | Track, peak hold, and first-peak for click wrenches |
| Units | Newton metres, foot-pounds or inch-pounds as used on site |
| Data output | Printer, USB or software for the calibration record |
| Calibration | Traceable certificate and the recall interval required |
