Range is the specification buyers get wrong, and it is wrong in a predictable direction. A gauge is normally selected so the working pressure sits in the middle of its span — roughly a quarter to three quarters of full scale — which means a system running at 10 bar wants a 16 or 25 bar gauge and not a 10 bar one. A gauge working at the top of its scale fatigues its bourdon tube and drifts, and a gauge working at the bottom of an oversized scale cannot be read to any useful precision. After that, three things decide the model. The wetted material must suit the medium, and 316 stainless is the usual default where anything corrosive or chloride-bearing is involved. Vibration from a pump or compressor calls for a liquid-filled case. And a viscous, crystallising or aggressive fluid calls for a diaphragm seal, which changes the gauge from a component into an assembly.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Working pressure | Normal operating pressure — the range is chosen around it |
|---|---|
| Range required | Full scale, so the working point sits mid-span |
| Accuracy class | Per EN 837-1 — state what the duty actually needs |
| Dial size | Set by reading distance, commonly 63, 100 or 160 mm |
| Process connection | Thread size and type, and bottom or back entry |
| Wetted material | 316 stainless, monel or another alloy suited to the medium |
| Medium | Fluid, temperature, and whether it is viscous or crystallising |
| Case filling | Glycerine or silicone filled where vibration or pulsation is present |
| Diaphragm seal | Required for viscous, aggressive or sanitary media |
| Safety pattern | Solid front with blow-out back for high pressure or hazardous media |
| Ambient exposure | Direct sun and outdoor mounting — affects case and window choice |
| Accessories | Siphon, snubber, isolating valve or gauge cock |
| Calibration | State if a traceable calibration certificate is required |
