There are two different purchases behind this name and they serve different people. A severity meter answers one question — is this machine acceptable — by reading overall velocity in millimetres per second RMS and comparing it against the evaluation zones in the ISO 20816 series, which classify machines by size and mounting. That is what a supervisor needs on a walk-round and it is a modest instrument. An analyser answers a different question — what is wrong with it — by capturing a spectrum and a time waveform, so an imbalance at running speed can be told apart from a misalignment at twice running speed and a bearing defect at its own frequency. The second is a route-based programme and it needs someone trained to read it. Decide which you are buying before comparing prices, and state the machine class and the frequency range you must cover.
