Two different products share this name and they are quoted on entirely different information. Bare bar is a material purchase — copper or aluminium in a stated section and temper, cut and drilled by a panel builder — and what matters is the section, the plating at the joints and the temper, because hard-drawn bar and annealed bar bend differently and a joint that is bolted at the wrong torque runs hot for years before it fails. Busbar trunking is an engineered system bought by run: a rated current, a length, a set of tap-off points and a route with bends and fire barriers in it. In both cases the current rating in a catalogue is quoted at a reference ambient and derates once the bar sits enclosed in a panel in a hot switch room, which is exactly where it does sit. State whether you want bar or trunking, and give the ambient rather than the room's design figure.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Product type | Bare bar for fabrication, or busbar trunking as a system |
|---|---|
| Conductor material | Copper or aluminium — affects section, weight and jointing |
| Current rating | Continuous amperes, at the enclosed ambient not the catalogue one |
| Bar section | Width and thickness, or the trunking system rating |
| Short-circuit withstand | Rated short-time withstand current and duration |
| Temper | Hard, half-hard or annealed where the bar must be formed |
| Plating | Bare, tinned or silvered at joint faces |
| Length and route | For trunking, the run length, bends, tees and elevation changes |
| Tap-off points | Number and rating of tap-off boxes along the run |
| IP rating | Trunking route through plant areas, risers or outdoors |
| Fire barriers | Where the run crosses a fire compartment boundary |
| Quantity | Metres or lengths per section, or the full trunking schedule |
