Terminals are quoted per hundred and specified per millimetre, and the number that governs everything is the conductor cross-section range. A block is rated for a band, not a single size, and a panel built with 2.5 square millimetre terminals throughout will not accept the 6 square millimetre tails that arrive on a motor circuit. The second choice is the clamping technology. Screw terminals are familiar and are still specified where a contractor will retorque them at handover; spring-cage and push-in terminals do not loosen under vibration and do not need the retorque, which is why they have taken over on skid-mounted and rotating plant. Beyond that the enquiry is about function: feed-through, earth, fused, disconnect or knife-disconnect for test isolation, and multi-level blocks where panel width is short. Give the cross-section range, the rail type, the function mix and the marking scheme, and the offer is straightforward.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Conductor cross-section | The full range the terminal must accept, in square millimetres |
|---|---|
| Clamping technology | Screw, spring-cage or push-in |
| Function | Feed-through, earth, fused, disconnect, or multi-level |
| Rated voltage and current | Circuit voltage and the current the terminal carries |
| Rail type | 35 mm top hat DIN rail, or another profile |
| Vibration exposure | Rotating plant and skids favour spring or push-in over screw |
| Marking scheme | Terminal numbering, and whether markers are supplied fitted |
| Colour coding | Grey, blue and green-yellow, or a site-specific scheme |
| Accessories | End plates, end stops, jumper bars and partition plates |
| Ferrules | State if crimped ferrules are required on stranded conductors |
| Ambient temperature | Panel internal temperature, not the room |
| Quantity | Blocks per type and size, plus accessories |
