For a low-voltage assembly the term to get right is form of separation. IEC 61439-2 describes how far the busbars, the functional units and the outgoing terminals are segregated from each other, and it decides whether a technician can work on one outgoing way while the rest of the board stays live. Form 1 offers no internal separation at all; Form 4 separates each functional unit and its terminals. Boards are routinely bought as Form 2 when the maintenance plan silently assumes Form 4, and that is discovered during the first live intervention. The second point is verification. IEC 61439 replaced the old idea of a type-tested assembly with design verification, so what you want from a builder is evidence that this arrangement was verified, including the temperature-rise verification at the ambient your switch room actually reaches. Send the single line diagram, the load schedule and the room temperature.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Assembly type | Main LV panel, sub-distribution board, MCC, or MV panel |
|---|---|
| Form of separation | Form 1 to 4 — decides what can be worked on while live |
| Incoming rating | Main incomer current, and busbar continuous rating |
| Short-circuit withstand | Rated short-time withstand current and duration |
| Outgoing ways | Count and rating of each outgoing device, with spare ways |
| Switch room ambient | The temperature-rise verification must match it |
| IP rating | Indoor clean room, dusty plant area, or outdoor |
| Enclosure material | Painted steel, or stainless for coastal or washdown areas |
| Cable entry | Top or bottom, gland plate size and cable schedule |
| Metering and comms | Meters, protection relays and the protocol required |
| Capacitor or PFC section | State if power factor correction is included in the board |
| Labelling | Arabic, English or bilingual, and the labelling standard |
| Documentation | Single line diagram, verification evidence, routine test certificates |
