An isolation transformer is bought for what it separates, not for what it converts, and that is why a kVA figure alone is never enough to quote against. The ratio is usually one to one. What the buyer is actually specifying is a galvanic break: a supply whose secondary has no reference to the site earth until you give it one, so that a single earth fault on a sensitive circuit does not trip the source or put fault current through an instrument reference. State the reason and the right unit follows. Separating a noisy drive from an analyser needs an electrostatic screen between windings and a stated coupling capacitance; creating an unearthed IT system for a control room or a test bay needs a double-wound unit with insulation monitoring; separating a portable tool circuit is a different, simpler product again. Tell us what problem the separation is solving and where the secondary earth reference will be made.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Purpose of isolation | Noise rejection, unearthed IT system, or safety separation |
|---|---|
| Voltage ratio | Usually 1:1 — state if the secondary voltage also changes |
| Rated power | kVA, allowing for the inrush of the connected equipment |
| Winding construction | Double-wound — an auto-transformer gives no galvanic separation |
| Electrostatic screen | Single or double screen, and any coupling capacitance limit |
| Secondary earthing | Earthed neutral, or left unearthed as an IT system |
| Insulation monitoring | Required where the secondary is deliberately unearthed |
| Phases | Single-phase or three-phase, and whether a neutral is needed |
| Enclosure and IP rating | Open chassis for panel building, or a cabinet |
| Site ambient temperature | State the design maximum inside the enclosure, not the room |
| Load type | Instruments, drives, medical, tooling or test equipment |
| Quantity | Units, and the circuits each must serve |
