The letters on a fuse matter more than the amps. Under IEC 60269 a utilisation category such as gG, aM or aR tells you what the fuse was designed to protect: gG is a general-purpose full-range fuse, aM is a partial-range motor fuse that deliberately ignores starting inrush and must be paired with a separate overload device, and aR is an ultra-fast semiconductor fuse for protecting rectifiers and drives. Fitting a gG where the design called for aM causes nuisance operation on every motor start; fitting aM where gG was intended leaves a cable unprotected against a sustained overload, which is the more dangerous mistake and the quieter one. So state the category, then the body size and mounting, since NH sizes, cylindrical sizes and blade types are not interchangeable in a holder. And order the holder with the fuse — mismatched pairs are the most common line correction on this product.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Utilisation category | gG general purpose, aM motor, aR semiconductor |
|---|---|
| Rated current | In amperes, and the circuit it protects |
| Rated voltage | AC or DC, and the system voltage — DC ratings differ |
| Breaking capacity | Prospective fault current at the point of installation |
| Body type and size | NH size 000 to 4, cylindrical dimensions, or blade type |
| Holder or base | DIN rail holder, bolted base, switch-disconnector or handle |
| Indication | Striker or blown-fuse indicator, and any microswitch signal |
| Overload device | Required alongside aM fuses — state the thermal overload used |
| Ambient derating | State the panel internal temperature, not the room |
| Application | Cable protection, motor circuit, drive input, or PV string |
| Spares holding | Replacement fuses to hold per rating |
| Quantity | Units per rating, with matching holders |
