An abrasive chop saw is the fastest way to cut steel section in a fabrication shop, and the reason it stays fast is that the consumable does the work — so the sensible specification covers the disc supply as much as the machine. Cutting capacity is stated for each section shape, because a machine that takes a large round bar may take a smaller square tube, and the vice arrangement is what actually determines whether an angle or a channel can be held squarely enough to cut. Two operational points belong in the decision. The machine throws a long, hot spark stream, so its position in the workshop is a fire consideration and the area behind it should be clear of anything that will catch — and if the work must move to the material rather than the other way round, this is the wrong tool and a portable saw is the answer. Second, the disc speed rating must always exceed the machine's no-load speed.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Sections cut | Round, square, rectangular tube, angle, channel and flat |
|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | Per section shape, not a single headline dimension |
| Disc size and bore | It sets the capacity and the consumable |
| No-load speed | Disc rating must always exceed it |
| Vice arrangement | Whether angle and channel can be held squarely |
| Mitre capability | Angle range and whether the vice or the head swivels |
| Spark stream | Position in the workshop and what is behind the machine |
| Throughput | Cuts per shift, which drives the disc consumption |
| Power supply | Voltage and phases at 60 Hz, and the breaker rating |
| Extraction | State if fume or particulate extraction is required |
| Disc supply | Annual disc consumption for a schedule price |
| Guarding | Guard condition and any screen required around the position |
