A pipe wrench grips by biting into the pipe, and everything about choosing one follows from that. The length of the handle sets both the reach and the leverage, and the two are matched by the manufacturer to the jaw — which is why extending a wrench with a scaffold tube is not a shortcut but an overload, and why wrenches fail at the jaw or the hook with somebody's weight behind them. If more torque is needed, the answer is the next size of wrench, not a longer bar. The bite is also the reason a pipe wrench is wrong for finished work: it marks the pipe permanently, so plated, painted, stainless or plastic-coated pipe needs a strap wrench or a soft-jaw tool instead. Two practical items complete the order. Replaceable jaws and hook parts extend the life of a good wrench considerably, and aluminium-bodied wrenches are worth the premium where they are carried up a scaffold every day.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.

| Body material | Cast iron or aluminium, where weight is carried up scaffold |
| Jaw type | Straight, offset, end, or chain wrench for restricted access |
| Replaceable parts | Jaw, hook and pin availability for a long service life |
| Access | Space around the pipe, which may decide an offset or chain tool |
