An impact wrench delivers torque in blows and does not control it, and that single fact governs how it should be specified and used. Its rated torque is what it can achieve under favourable conditions, and the actual torque delivered on a given joint depends on the socket, the extension, the air supply or battery state and how long the trigger is held. So an impact wrench is the right tool for running a fastener down and for breaking a rusted one loose, and the wrong tool for setting a final torque — that is a torque wrench's job, and a joint that matters should be finished with one. The rated figures also come in pairs: fastening torque and the higher nut-busting torque, and comparing one manufacturer's fastening figure against another's breakaway figure is not a comparison. Add impact sockets, because chrome hand sockets are not made for impact use and can shatter.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Fastener size | The largest fastener the tool must run and break loose |
|---|---|
| Fastening torque | Required torque to run the fastener down |
| Nut-busting torque | The higher figure for breaking corroded fasteners — quoted separately |
| Final torque control | State the torque wrench that will set the final figure |
| Drive size | Square drive, matched to the sockets in use |
| Power type | Pneumatic, cordless on the site battery platform, or corded |
| Air supply | For pneumatic, the pressure and flow available at the tool |
| Torque control settings | Multi-stage settings where over-tightening must be limited |
| Impact sockets | Impact rated, since chrome hand sockets can shatter |
| Vibration and noise | Declared values where the tool is used for long periods |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if used in a classified area |
| Quantity | Tools per crew, with the socket and extension sets |
