For a site buying more than a handful of cordless tools, the most consequential decision is not the drill at all — it is the battery platform. Batteries and chargers are not interchangeable between manufacturers, so every tool bought commits the site further to one system, and a store holding three incompatible platforms carries three sets of spare batteries, three chargers per vehicle and a permanent supply of the wrong battery at the wrong moment. Choose the platform deliberately, on the breadth of the tool range and on battery availability locally, then buy tools into it. After that the drill specification is straightforward: chuck capacity for the largest bit, a two-speed gearbox so low speed gives torque for large holes in steel and high speed gives speed for small holes, and a clutch for driving screws. Corded still wins where a tool runs continuously at a bench, and pneumatic where a classified area rules out an electric motor.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Battery platform | The system already on site — this is the decision that compounds |
|---|---|
| Power type | Cordless, corded, or pneumatic for a classified area |
| Materials drilled | Steel, stainless, aluminium, timber, or plastic |
| Largest hole | It sets the chuck capacity and the torque needed |
| Chuck | Keyless or keyed, and the capacity required |
| Speed range | Two-speed gearbox for torque at low speed and speed at high |
| Clutch | For screwdriving without stripping the fixing |
| Battery capacity | Amp-hours and how many packs per tool for a shift |
| Duty | Occasional use, or continuous which favours corded |
| Hazardous area | State the zone if the tool is used in a classified area |
| Accessories | Bit sets, hole saws, angle heads, and cases |
| Quantity | Tools per crew, with battery and charger holding |
