Accuracy on a torque wrench lives in the middle of its scale, not across all of it, so the single most useful habit is to hold a small set of overlapping wrenches and tighten each joint near the middle of one of them — rather than owning one large wrench and using it at the bottom of its range, which is the least reliable place it can work. After that the choice is about how the fitter uses it. A click wrench signals and is quick, and it will happily go on past the click if somebody keeps pulling. A dial wrench shows the load building, which suits a joint tightened in stages or a flange pulled up in a pattern. A digital wrench does both and can record the result against a joint number, which is what a bolted joint record actually needs. Two habits go with them: wind a click wrench back to the low end for storage, and never extend the handle.
