The choice between a manual cutter and a wet saw is usually made on the tile, and it should also be made on the dust. Scoring and snapping produces a clean straight cut in ceramic with no dust and no power, and it is quick for a straightforward tiling job. Porcelain, and particularly large-format or thick porcelain, resists scoring and generally needs a diamond blade — and cutting that dry releases respirable crystalline silica, which is a genuine health hazard rather than a nuisance. A wet saw suppresses it at source, which is why wet cutting is the default for anything that cannot be snapped, and why dry cutting indoors needs extraction and respiratory protection rather than an open window. Then the practical dimensions: the longest cut the machine must make, which for large-format tile is the number that rules most machines out, and whether mitre and plunge cuts are needed.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Tile material | Ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, or large-format panel |
|---|---|
| Tile thickness | It decides whether scoring will work at all |
| Longest cut required | Large-format tile rules out most machines on this alone |
| Cutting method | Score and snap, or a diamond blade wet saw |
| Dust control | Wet cutting suppresses silica at source — dry cutting needs extraction |
| Water supply and drainage | For a wet saw, on site and indoors |
| Mitre and plunge cuts | State if the job needs them |
| Power supply | Voltage available at the position, and any RCD requirement |
| Portability | Carried up a building, or set up in one place |
| Blades | Diamond blade type matched to the material, with the wear rate |
| Respiratory protection | State if dry cutting is unavoidable |
| Quantity | Machines per crew, with blades and consumables |
