Butterfly valves give isolation and some throttling capability in a fraction of the weight and face-to-face length of a gate valve, which makes them the practical choice on large-bore water, HVAC and low-pressure process lines. The critical distinction is concentric versus double or triple offset: concentric resilient-seated valves are inexpensive and limited in temperature and pressure, while triple offset metal-seated designs give bubble-tight shutoff on hot or higher-pressure service and cost accordingly.
