Plug valves use a tapered or cylindrical plug rather than a ball, and earn their place on dirty, viscous or solids-bearing service where a ball valve cavity would pack and seize. Lubricated designs suit high pressure and abrasive duty but need a sealant maintenance regime; sleeved designs are maintenance-free but limited in temperature. Double block and bleed plug valves are common on pipeline and terminal manifolds where positive isolation must be proven.
