Fittings are specified by the way they are joined before anything else, because butt weld, socket weld and threaded fittings are dimensioned to different standards and are not interchangeable. For butt weld fittings the wall thickness must match the connecting pipe schedule, so the pipe specification has to travel with the enquiry. Material traceability certificates are routinely required on pressure-containing fittings and are worth stating up front rather than discovering at inspection.
