Globe valves are the throttling counterpart to the gate valve: the seating surfaces close perpendicular to the flow, so the valve can sit part-open for long periods without the seat damage a gate would suffer. The trade is a tortuous flow path and a markedly higher pressure drop, which is why they appear on regulating and bypass duty rather than on main isolation. Flow direction is not optional β installing one backwards will chatter the disc.
