A control valve is sized on process data, not on line size, and fitting one to the pipe diameter is the most common and most expensive specification error. The valve must be selected from flow rates, inlet and outlet pressures, temperature and fluid properties so that the required Cv falls sensibly within its range, and so that cavitation, flashing and noise are checked at the worst-case condition. Expect to send a process datasheet rather than a part number.
The more of this you send, the closer the first quotation lands.
| Line size and valve size | State both; the valve is often smaller than the line |
|---|---|
| Flow data | Minimum, normal and maximum flow rate with units |
| Pressure data | Inlet and outlet pressure at each flow case |
| Fluid and phase | Medium, density, viscosity, vapour pressure |
| Temperature | Operating and design |
| Valve type | Globe, rotary, eccentric plug, or segmented ball |
| Trim characteristic | Linear, equal percentage, or quick opening |
| Anti-cavitation or low noise trim | State if required, or ask us to check |
| Body material and rating | WCB, CF8M, ASME class |
| Actuator | Pneumatic diaphragm, piston, or electric; fail open or fail closed |
| Positioner and signal | 4-20 mA HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus PA |
| Hazardous area certification | ATEX/IECEx zone and protection type |
| SIL rating | State if used in a safety instrumented function |
